With January being a particularly manic time of the year in the promo industry, it’s easy to let tax returns slide until the eleventh hour. However, DSR Tax Claims have delivered a stern warning for those who drag their feet following weeks of reported technical issues for HMRC.
DSR’s founder, David Redfern, stated: “The temptation is always there to leave your tax return submission to the last minute, but if you then encounter any problems and you need HMRC’s help to complete your tax return, you’re going to find yourself missing that deadline.”
HMRC’s phone lines and web-chat services were reportedly plagued with issues last month. Such technical wobbles can leave people open to penalties and fines for late filing.
David continued: “With an automatic £100 penalty for missing the 31st January deadline by just one day, it could end up being a costly mistake to make, especially when personal finances are tight after the festive period.”
He added that HMRC always face high demand for their services at this time of year due to the sheer number of Self Assessment tax return submissions (over 10 million UK people will be expected to submit by the 31 January deadline).
